Perspectus Architecture worked with the MetroHealth team to design a new, fully-accessible home for individuals with spinal cord injuries. The Zubizarreta House provides free temporary housing for patients, families and caregivers while they are undergoing rehabilitation and treatment at MetroHealth Medical Center.
The new 7,500 square-foot home is located on a two-acre site adjacent to the Old Brooklyn MetroHealth Campus (OBC), allowing easy access to hospital’s research laboratories and rehabilitation clinic.
Designed with the Small House Model in mind, and focused on Person-Centered Care, the Zubizarreta House comprises a large shared great room and kitchen area along with five individual suites for each patient and caregiver.
The home also includes apartments for two MetroHealth employees serving as house hosts/innkeepers. Design features include roll-in showers and fully motorized lifts for transfers between wheelchairs and beds.
